The Ahupua'a kapa of Ka Makana Ali'i pays tribute to significant historical sites of the Ewa Plain. The panels represent the sun, Kaonohi okala, as it crosses over the Waianae mountain range, Kua' okala. You'll see Hono'uli'uli, and the Ewa plain, where James Campbell drilled for artesian water, ushering in O'ahu's sugar industry and the modern development of the region. In Kalaeloa, water-filled underground volcanic caves, later known as Karst caves, were found and contained an abundance of indigenous freshwater shrimp or 'ope 'ula. In the third panel Pu'uloa, home of Ka'ahupahau, a guardian shark of Pearl Harbor who was known for traveling about, is vigilantly guarding her domain against man-eating invaders.
